Levels of carbon-14 in the atmosphere have varied greatly. This variation has natural causes, such as solar magnetic activity and ocean circulation, but since the industrial period, they can also be anthropogenic, such as the burning of fossil fuels or nuclear bombs and tests. This must be understood in order to increase the precision of carbon-14 dating, especially in the recent formation of organic materials.
